What are Wax Coated Boxes? Waxed boxes are literally corrugated cardboard boxes coated in wax so they will not deteriorate when packed with ice for shipping fresh produce. Waxed boxes are stronger than regular cardboard, especially when wet, plus they cushion and protect the produce. Approximately 1,500,000 new wax boxes are produced every day in the United States – that’s over 1,800 TONS per day! Why Aren't Waxed Boxes Recycled Like Other Cardboard? The wax is actually a contaminant to the regular recycling process. As little as 1 wax box per 500 pound bale can contaminate the whole process. What Three Problems Does The Disposal Of Wax Coated Cardboard Pose? 1. Landfill Consumption Until now, wax boxes were not recyclable and had to be hauled to the landfill. One attempt at recycling wax cardboard was with chemical stripping of the wax to free up the low-value cellulose. That process failed because it was wasteful, polluting, and not economically viable. Until the development of HOTLOGS, only a tiny fraction of the wax box waste stream was diverted from landfills; some being shredded for compost and worm farmers. Over 95% of the millions of boxes used daily have been going to burgeoning landfills - the end-users paying the cost. 2. Disposal Expenses All major end-users of wax boxes can see a better bottom line by removing the wax boxes from their waste stream. Reduced "tipping costs” (industry jargon for the total cost of trash removal and dumping) and reduced dumpster sizes immediately save the participant money. Grocers can further improve their bottom-line through our Trash-to-Cash Green Circle Program. Holiday Quality Foods – a small grocery chain of 26 stores - was spending approximately $ 5,000 per store per year on “tipping costs”. Our Green Circle Program not only eliminated that expense, but now Holiday Quality Foods makes a profit carrying 100% Recycled FireLogs under their brand label. The option to retail 100% Recycled FireLogs at a preferential wholesale cost allows retailers to make a higher than average return on merchandise investment for their stores. See Bright idea heats homes with waste, a Sept. 6, 2001 Record Searchlight news article that features Holiday’s success. 3. Landfill Diversion Legislation Diverting recyclable materials from the waste stream is the mandated goal of many local municipalities and state governments. Creating new avenues for business waste, however, has presented real technical challenges for Industry. Through the use of patented technology, the Wax Box FireLog Corp. has proudly developed its Trash-to-Cash Green Circle Program that provides businesses an economically viable way to support legislation. Why Does Wax Coated Cardboard Make A Superior Fuel Source? The highest quality food grade wax is used in the FDA approved process for packaging perishable foods for shipping to market. This high-BTU wax burns hot & clean with very mild candle-like smoke. The compressed corrugations of the cardboard have a memory, and when each successive layer is heated, the energy of the compressed corrugations relaxes forming natural veins for airflow to stimulate the burn. Independent testing conducted by Omni Consulting Services, Inc. confirms that 100% Recycled Wax Box FireLogs burn cleaner, yield greater flame optics and BTU’s per pound than either firewood or other manufactured firelogs. www.omnilabs.com |
